Article Abstract:
Mating with males decreases the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans hermophrodites. The longevity of hermophrodites is independent of egg production or receipt of sperm, and internal hatching of eggs. The stress of copulation enhances the susceptibility to infection by bacteria and decreases hermophrodite lifespan. Males, however, are unaffected by mating.

The complex biochemistry of lifespan could be glimpsed by a new large-scale study of gene expression in worms. Microarray technology helps in identifying a large set of genes whose activity is linked to lifespan.
