Article Abstract:
Erythropoietin (EPO) is essential for the growth and survival of HCD57 cells, an EPO-dependent erythroid-progenitor cell line expressing high levels of KIT, but the KIT ligand stem-cell factor (SCF) receptor can substitute for EPO as long as both KIT and EPO receptors are expressed. KIT can be activated by EPO receptor tyrosine phosphorylation that is induced by SCF. Therefore, both KIT and SCF are essential for non-haematopoietic survival, migration and proliferation as well as the further proliferation and maturation of colony-forming unit erythriod.
