Article Abstract:
A record of intense hurricane activity in the western North Atlantic Ocean over the part 5,000 years that is based on sediment cores from a Caribbean lagoon that contain coarse-grained deposits associated with intense hurricane landfalls is presented. The changes in intense hurricane activity can be predicted by understanding the response of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation and the West African monsoon to future climate change.

Article Abstract:
Studying the historical observations and reconstruction techniques, the anomalous state of the troposphere and stratosphere in the Northern Hemisphere from 1940 to 1942 that occurred during a strong and long lasting El Nino event is described. Concluding that the observed anomalies constitute a recurring extreme state of the global troposphere-stratosphere system in northern winter that is related to strong El Nino events.

Show that climate anomalies associated with the large EI Nino of 1940-42 extended too much more of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe. The atmospheric circulation anomalies also reached into the stratosphere, influencing the ozone layer. Similar results from climate-model simulations likewise suggest that the effects of extreme ENSO events may be more far-reaching than previously thought.
