Ichthyosaurian relationships illuminated by new primitive skeletons from Japan

Article Abstract:

A study of primitive reptile skeletons in Japan seeks to define the link between the Ichthyosauria reptiles from the Mesozoic age and other amniotes. New specimens of Utatsusaurus hataii from Japan's Lower Triassic age are the first to provide detailed features of nearly complete skeletons. Computer retrodeformation of the the images shows that Utatsusaurus retains transitional features of terrestrial amniotes that are unknown in other ichthyosaurs.

Article Abstract:

Most cells contain latent forms of the molecules that trigger apoptotic cell death. Susin and colleagues report that many of the key death factors usually live in the space between the inner and outer mitochondrion membranes. They show that purified mitochondria release the apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), which is a widely expressed flavoprotein, providing evidence that mitochondria are involved in several aspects of the death response.
