I want a new drug

Article Abstract:

When the AIDS epidemic first struck, San Francisco was the first city to bear the devastating onslaught of the disease. As a result, the city's scientific community has become a mirror of a highly AIDS-conscious society. However, the city has not lost the distinctive unconventional and pioneering attitude that it is known for. An example of this attitude is the fact that the biggest private contribution for AIDS research came from a rock band, Huey Lewis and the News, who produced the hit song 'I Want a New Drug'. Despite the devastating effects of the disease, the city remains unbowed, and is rising to the challenge.

Ringing the changes

Article Abstract:

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center is a world leader in electron-positron beam technology. At the forefront of its successes have been its electron-positron storage ring, SPEAR, which was instrumental in the discovery of the J/psi particle and the tau lepton. However, there is now a consensus that storage-ring technology has reached its upper limit. To move forward in particle physics research, particularly in unraveling the charge-conjugation-times-parity violation, linear colliders will have to be used. The Stanford Linear Collider is now the pioneer of the coming generation of particle accelerators.

Technology transfer

Article Abstract:

The University of California is now planning to strengthen links between academic institutions and business as a way out of its present economic dilemma. In the past, the University system focused to much on research that produced people with Ph.Ds rather than new technologies. The new approach will engender the setting up of corporations that will enhance and facilitate the technology transfer mechanism. This will entail direct discussions with the industrial sector even while ideas are at the benchtop stage.
