Honesty in sexual selection

Article Abstract:

A study prepared by L. Gustafsson, A. Qvarnstrom, and B.C. Sheldon examines the size of the white patch on the forehead of male collared flycatchers as an honest indicator of the birds' reproductive activities and the quality of their male offsprings' upbringing. A vital theory in sexual selection considers display characteristics as reliable indicators of quality, since only those in good condition can cope with the costs of maintaining such traits.

The best solution

Article Abstract:

The use of optimization has allowed biologists to move from merely describing patterns or mechanisms to being able to predict, from first principles, how organisms should be designed. Optimization can be used to understand behavior, and to predict population dynamics, in new environments, such as those resulting from habitat loss or a rise in sea level.
