Habitat use of eastern wild turkeys in central Mississippi

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken on the Tallahala Wildlife Management Area within the Bienville National Forest in Jasper, Newton, Scott and Smith counties in central Mississippi into habitat use of eastern wild turkeys indicates that habitat use patterns are generally consistent for males and females. Similar habitat use patterns are shown by females during autumn to winter, nonreproductive females and unsuccessful females during preincubation. In autum to winter and in summer, males prefer pine sawtimber, pine regeneration and hardwood sawtimber.

Article Abstract:

Habitat use of an eastern wild turkey population within the Bienville National Forest in four counties in central Mississippi, particularly on the Tallahala Wildlife Management Area, was described in three spatial scales. While male and female turkeys preferred pine and hardwood sawtimber most, poletimber appears to be the last choice. Results revealed that habitat use was similar at three spatial scales, and reflected the adaptable nature of wild turkeys and the high degree of habitat heterogeneity.
