From effluents to egrets

Article Abstract:

Arcata, California's 154 acres of freshwater and saltwater marshes inhabit about 200 species of birds, because of a successful aquaculture project. The 1970 environmental regulations forced Arcata to construct a costly sewage system to carry the effluents to the Pacific. However, in 1971, George Allen, a fisheries professor, came up with a plan to raise young salmon in a mixture of bay water and treated sewage. The nutrient-rich ponds fulfill the feed requirements of the fish. The habitat is alive with fishes, frogs, and waterfowls.

The monkeys' defence alliance

Article Abstract:

Animal behaviour research suggests monkeys group together to protect themselves against predators. Red colobus and diana monkeys, which often live together in the wild, communicate when they believe themselves threatened by chimpanzees. Scientists have long argued over the social reasoning behind group behaviour. Some experts believe monkeys group together to protect their source of food.

Article Abstract:

Grenada's mona monkeys, which have thrived despite a huge degree of inbreeding, are facing a new genetic bottleneck in the wake of Hurricane Ivan. The long-term effect of the hurricane on the genetically isolated mona monkeys in the West Indies is discussed.
