Article Abstract:
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France's biggest research group, is cooperating with private industry to a greater extent than ever before. The number of CNRS laboratories with industrial contracts rose from 150 in 1983 to 625 in 1992. However, a survey of 90 CNRS researchers and industry officials by the Paris-based firm Central Management also found that many of these contracts are too transitory to yield meaningful results, tend to be worth very little and are undermined by a lack of communication.
