Floods fail to save canyon beaches

Article Abstract:

The floodwater released into the river, experimentally, did not carry enough sediment to rebuild the area's eroded beaches. The Colorado River, which runs along the Grand Canyon in Arizona, used to be brown with sediment and was flanked by extensive beaches and sandbars that provided habitat for species like humpback chub (Gila cypha), a fish with degenerate eyes and a prominent hump that stabilizes it in the river's swirling waters.

Article Abstract:

The ivory-billed woodpecker, a huge bird supposed to have died years ago, was the goal of a group of scientists to study. For some the group's mission is a chance to bring back the bird from the verge of extinction whereas to others it means to save a species that might no longer grace the woods.
