Pairing status of male willow ptarmigan: is polygyny costly to males?
Article Abstract:
The relationship between male morphology and female mate selection was analyzed in natural populations of male willow ptarmigan, Lagopus lagopus, to determine the effects of polygyny to male willow ptarmigans. Analysis of pairing status in male Lagopus lagopus indicated the role of polygyny in increasing reproductive success compared to monogamous males. Furthermore, pairing status in male willow ptarmigan was dependent on their ability to defend a large territory, age and size.

Cultural variation in savannah sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis, songs: an analysis using the meme concept
Article Abstract:
The cultural variation in the songs of geographically distinct populations of savannah sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis, were examined using the meme concept. Results show that memes consisting of one syllable are more geographically widespread and randomly distributed among populations than memes composed of two-, three- and four-syllables. The findings suggest that one-syllable memes are due to random sharing events, while larger memes are due to sharing of common descent.
