Article Abstract:
The successful nucleotide sequencing of chromosome 3 of the yeast 'Saccharomyces cerevisiae' is not only a significant milestone for genetics researchers but a harbinger of more such projects to come. The ability of 35 laboratories in 17 countries to achieve the division of labor and diversity of skills needed to obtain the yeast sequence testify to the progress in genetics research. However, it would be wrong for observers to conclude that cDNA analysis is preferable to the sequencing of entire genomes; the two methods should be used together rather than as alternatives.

Article Abstract:
Researcher Richard F. Voss has confirmed the finding of correlations between nucleotide bases in DNA by C.-K. Peng and coworkers. Peng and colleagues reported in Nature, volume 356, page 168, 1992 that such correlations can continue through thousands of base positions in several different DNA sequences. Voss reports in the Physical Review Letters, volume 68, page 3805, Jun 22, 1992 that he used the binary character of computer arithmetic to show that recurrent patterns in the genome of cytomegalovirus strain AD169 were not due to chance but were true correlations.

Article Abstract:
The positive and negative aspects of advances in molecular biology research were evaluated. Two positive features marked the anniversary, one was the swiftness of breakthroughs in biology which had been influenced by powerful techniques and the other was how the DNA structure attracted young people's eagerness. But molecular biology is still preoccupied with a litany of cellular features, the authors were more concerned with accuracy than the importance of their observations and raced to publish their findings first.
