Euro-vote lifts block on biotech patents

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament's approval of revised laws on the legal protection of biotechnological inventions may make it clearer as to whether the European Patent Office (EPO) can legally grant patents on transgenic animals and plants. The EPO has nearly 2,000 outstanding applications, since plant and animal varieties were excluded from patentability. The EP approval of the draft directive, which explicitly allows patenting of life, including human genes, has been welcomed by the pharmaceutical industry. However there are concerns about the exclusion clause relating to processes that lead to suffering or physical handicaps without substantial medical benefits.

ESF in quandary over EC relations

Article Abstract:

The members feel that the foundation should fund activities related to the EC's programs, and it's powers should be increased for better performance. However, some members feel that linking the foundation with the EC's programs would make it subservient to the EC.
