Electrically induced structure formation and pattern transfer

Article Abstract:

Lateral structures in polymer films on a sub-micrometre length scale were created and replicated using a simple electrostatic technique. Pattern formation was found to occur in polymer films at elevated temperatures, and fixed by cooling. The instability can be focused in the direction of the highest electric field with the application of a laterally varying electrical field.

Surface-induced structure formation of polymer blends on patterned substrates

Article Abstract:

Phase separation in bulk mixtures often results in an isotropic, disordered morphology of the coexisting phases. The domains of a phase-separating mixture of polymers in a thin film can be maneuvered into arbitrary structures by a surface with a prepatterned variation of surface energies. The approach could be useful for fabricating polymer-based microelectronic circuits.
