Article Abstract:
Fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the mammalian brain is mostly mediated by ionotrophic glutamate receptors. The three subtypes of these receptors are AMPA, NMDA and kainate. Kainate-receptor subunits are expressed widely in the mammalian central nervous system. The developing thalamocortical synapses are shown to express postsynaptic kainate receptors along with AMPA receptors, although the two subtypes do not co-localize. The kainate receptor contribution to transmission falls during the period for experience-dependent plasticity.
