Article Abstract:
Pictures of strange, gelatinous deep-sea worms that have intrigued zoologists for a long time have hinted at the solution to an evolutionary puzzle. The reassessment of evolutionary histories of the pterobranchs and enteropneusts was prompted by the report of a collection of the first good-quality specimen of a lophenteropneust, which is supposed to be the missing link between the two groups.

The alkenones from marine sediments in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean are analyzed. This is done to reconstruct sea surface temperatures and marine productivity over the past 1.8 million years.
