Article Abstract:

NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite found anisotropies in the cosmic background radiation on Apr 23, 1992 that back up the Big Bang theory of the universe's origin and structure. Anisotropies are variations in temperature whose existence was predicted as a necessary aftereffect of the Big Bang. Hence, COBE's discovery of the variations is an important new confirmation of the Big Bang model, since the variations' angular scale is so large that only the Big Bang could have caused them.

Dark matter comes in from the cold

Article Abstract:

Recent observational evidence confirming parts of the Big Bang theory was reported at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Phoenix, AZ on Jan 3-7, 1993. J.S. Mulchaey related how the ROSAT X-ray satellite discovered hot, diffuse intergalactic gas and heavy elements in the NGC2300 galaxy group. Both findings bore out the predictions of the Big Bang model, which holds that the gas and heavy elements must exist along with the dark baryonic matter that makes up most of the Universe.

Beyond the inflationary border

Article Abstract:

The cosmological observations made by cosmologists are discussed. The confirmation of the predictions of the standard cosmological model, a picture based on a combination of the Big Bang theory and inflationary cosmology are mentioned.
