Article Abstract:
The 'Genome Directory' is a compilation of data on the human genome and contains 52 million base pairs of expressed sequence tags (ESTs). It is an important source of information about genes. Identification of new cDNAs for a gene under study is possible by electronic screening of large EST datasets with fragments of sequences. From the information given in the book, it is possible to find the total number of genes in human genome, gene families and number of genes involved in different functions of a cell.

Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing a theoretical solution to the lek paradox, which refers to female choice and how it is linked to genetic benefits. There is evidence that genetic variance in fitness traits does persist despite direction selection, and that female choices frequently lead to genetic benefits.

Research examining the adhesion and signalling functions of beta-catenins in Caenorhabditis elegans is presented. Separate proteins are shown to perform these different functions.
