Active brood care in an amphipod: Influences of embryonic development, temperature and oxygen

Article Abstract:

The fertilized eggs of female amphipods (Crustacea) are carried in an external brood pouch until the formed juveniles emerge, known as passive brood care. In active brood care, specific maternal activities may be directed towards the brood. Crangonyx pseudogracilis is shown to engage in active brood care, such as flexing to expand the brood pouch and increase suspension of eggs, as well as ventilation of the brood pouch. Nonviable eggs are also selectively ejected from the broods.

The mating system of Gammarus pulex: a negligible role for micro-habitat segregation

Article Abstract:

The approach involving individual-based modelling and simulations of pairing behavior leads to the conclusion that micro-habitat segregation by body length is the major factor in the mating system of Gammarus pulex. This conclusion results because of the unrealistic and restrictive parameters that are considered in the simulation. When the parameters are improved, habitat segregation will have no significant effect.

Article Abstract:

Contest behavior of amphipod, Gammarus pulex, during precopula is analyzed. Males assess their own resource-holding potential during struggles with females. Physiological state of the loser is examined.
