Article Abstract:
The filaments generated by intestinal cells invaded by enteropathogenic Escherchia coli (EPEC) are composed of actin. What the filaments are made of will be important in determining the usefulness of polycationic beads as models for EPEC infections and other bacterial infections. Staining the filaments with an actin-specific phallotoxin conjugated with fluorescein verified the presence of actin. Though impressive, this conclusion should be tested by observing EPEC on the surfaces of living cells.

Article Abstract:
Cell biology pioneer Keith Roberts Porter was responsible for a number of technical developments and major discoveries in his field. He was the first to use whole-mount electron microscopy to analyze cells in tissue culture and he later helped build the first viable microtome for thin section cutting. Porter's discoveries were a major contribution to the development of cell biology science. He was also a great science politician and orator. Porter died on May 2 1997, aged 84.

Maternal transcripts of the zebrafish Nodal-related morphogen, Squint(Sqt), can localize to two blastomeres at the four-cell stage and predict the dorsal axis is proved. The dorsoventral axis is apparent by early clevage stages and may require the maternally encoded morphogen Sqt and its associated factors is concluded.
