The US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) reports that global temperatures over the past millennium are showing a sharp rise that makes the otherwise flattish line looking graph look like a hockey stick. Climatic groups have claimed it an evidence of dangerous global warming sceptics, especially in the United States and Canada, have questioned the study's merit and statistical methodology.

A growing number of professional physical scientists are going back to university to begin new careers in biology. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is facilitating about 20 mid-career scientists each year to go back into the classroom under a unique grant program called K25s that allow researchers to spend up to five years learning the discipline of their choice.

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has nominated Ralph Cicerone as its next president. Once elected, he will serve a six-year term from July 2005 and he will be the first climate change-scientist to become its president.
