Article Abstract:
Production of organic precursors to life is critically dependent on the form of the reactants, particularly an environment dominated by N(sub2), which is less efficient in synthesizing nitrogen-bearing organics. The mineral-catalyzed reduction of N(sub2) NO-(sub2) and NO-(sub3) to ammonia is demonstrated at temperatures of 300-800 degrees C. N(sub2) is shown to be stable above 800 degrees C and it is concluded that mineral-catalyzed N(sub2) reduction may have provided a major source of ammonia to the Hadean ocean.
