A cadmium enzyme from a marine diatom

Article Abstract:

The sequence and preliminary characterization of a protein that is a cadmium-containing carbonic anhydrase from the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii is presented. The existence of a cadmium enzyme in marine phytoplankton may indicate that there is a unique selection pressure for metallo-enzymes in the marine environment.

Biodiversity of plankton by species oscillations and chaos

Article Abstract:

A solution to the plankton paradox is offered. Resources competition models are shown to generate oscillations and chaos if species compete for three or more resources. It is also shown that such oscillations and chaotic fluctuations in species abundances enable many species to coexist on a handful of resources.

Global biodiversity patterns of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton

Article Abstract:

Knowledge of biodiversity patterns in marine phytoplankton and zooplankton is very limited as compared to other biodiversities. These marine biodiversity patterns show a worldwide consistency, despite obvious differences in environmental conditions of the various oceanographic regions.
