A breath of fresh air

Article Abstract:

The Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) lobby group is forcing the Indian government to adapt new regulations for reducing air pollution, climate change, water management, pesticides and poverty. The CEO of CSE, Sunita Narain, has described the accomplishments of CSE in banning the sales of soft drinks like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo at schools, hospitals and government-owned offices and also its anti-pollution campaign in Delhi and in Ahmedabad.

Conflicts undermine global forum's push for safe water

Article Abstract:

The organizers of the third world water forum in Japan are of the view that they succeeded in translating a vision for solving the global problems of water supply into action. It is held that community-level public participation is fundamental to achieving the goals of the forum and that the common basic requirement for water is an opportunity for cooperation and peace.

Japanese call for more bite in animal rules

Article Abstract:

The Japanese parliament is preparing an updated version of the 1973 animal welfare law, which is expected to pass by June 2005. This has led to a debate between animal-welfare activists and researchers in Japan over how strictly the use of animals in the country's labs should be controlled.
