The 2003 Pew Oceans Commission report and the 2004 US Commission on Ocean Policy report are both analyzed. Priorities suggested for improving ocean ecosystem and resource management include outreach and education efforts by aquatic, marine, and terrestrial conservation practitioners, the integration of research, and clearly defining actor roles in the implementation of policy recommendations.

Findings drawn from DNA fingerprinting techniques indicate that highly conservative conservation management is needed to protect both Holothuria nobilis stocks and the ecosystem on the Great Barrier Reef.
