Eight hundred proposals have been received in response to Chancellor William Waldegrave's request for suggestions to be considered in a White Paper on the organization of science in the UK. At issue is the extent to which science funding and organization should be governed by a free market. It is feared that such governance alone cannot provide the long-term commitment essential to scientific and technological progress. The Advisory Council on Science and Technology has proposed a three-tiered hierarchy of policy-making bodies, funding bodies and research providers.

Pressure group Save British Science is putting pressure on the UK government to double investment in research and development in the period to 2008. This comes as the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology publishes a report containing a call for an urgent investment of at least $684 million in university laboratories and research equipment. Junior Minister for Science John Battle has announced that the government has agreed additional funding for three programmes in space technology.
