Women now participate in sports in record numbers and buy more athletic apparel than men. Profiles of 20 women who have influenced this trend are presented. The women include Kathy Davenport, Liz Dolan, Tara VanDerveer, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Donna Lopiano and Robin Roberts.

Many women athletes believe that their performance declines during menstruation. However, research indicates that a woman's aerobic capacity should peak during menstruation, when her estrogen levels are lowest. The variances are minute and would affect only top athletes.

Risk-taking athletes tend to be highly intuitive people, and they can use their intuition to enhance performance and avoid dangerous situations. Intuition can be applied to such sports as rock climbing, kayaking and even basketball. Several examples are cited.
