A program called Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), begun in Sta. Cruz, CA, has placed medical examination in the hands of especially trained nurses. It has humanized the examination of rape victims and helped convict rapists. Sue Brown founded the Fairfax Hospital's SANE center.
