A list of restaurants that have won the acclaim of respondents to the 1996 Restaurant Survey conducted by Washingtonian magazine is presented. Considered the best restaurant was L'Auberge Chez Francois while Monroe's was voted as the best among newly established restaurants.

Readers of 'The Washingtonian' selected Kinkeads seafood restaurant in the Foggy Bottom area as their favorite restaurant for the second year in a row. Other choices such as Best New Restaurant, Best Service, Best Brunch and many other categories are also presented.

Article Abstract:

L'Auberge Chez Francois was chosen as the best restaurant in Washington in 1997 by readers of 'Washingtonian.' The restaurant was also cited for its excellent service. Carlyle Grand Cafe and Kinkead's were also included in the best restaurants list.
