Article Abstract:

Washington's established artists are earning commissions, retrospectives, and awards, national and international recognition, but at home they are often overshadowed by the big museums and blockbuster shows. For Sam Gilliam, one of Washington's most successful painters, the city is a short of a hideout, and the others successful artists like William Christen Berry, Mann Cleary, Jim Sanborn and Yorika Yamaguchi are also a little known in the city outside the art circle.

He played a role in a $15-billion emergency plan for AIDS proposed by President Bush that has paid for antiretroviral drugs for 400,000 Africans with HIV.

Luminous mysteries

Article Abstract:

Robin Rose, a Florida native who started working with encaustic at Florida State University has spent more than 30 years making multi layered, richly textured abstract wax paintings. He talks about his art, his beliefs and his latest work on a series of painting for a one-person show to be held at Hemphill gallery based on world secrets.
