Article Abstract:

Illegal hunters in Alaska are hard to catch and prosecute. They are rarely witnessed because of the vastness of the state, they hunt in airplanes, prohibited by law, and they are are often professional people. A case is related and a profile of poachers is given.

Traditional archery has gained a large following among hunters who revel in the ability to bring down large game using handmade equipment. They prefer to make their own bows in traditional designs such as the recurve, the longbow or the flatbow.

Informants and the use of undercover agents play a large role in the apprehension of illegal hunting guides. Denny Thompson and Bill Sims, for example, were convicted through the efforts of Nando Mauldin, an agent posing as a bear hunter.
