There is hardly any illiteracy, infant mortality is low, and people live nearly as long as Europeans. This is unusual for a part of a developing nation. The Keralites enjoy reading the newspaper and talking about politics.

It describes his walk from Louisville, KY, to the Gulf Coast of Florida. The route is retraced to determine the environmental damages since Muir's trek in 1867.
