Japanese ryokan

Article Abstract:

A man stays at a Japanese luxury inn, or a ryokan. The rooms are simple and minimalistic compared to US luxury hotel rooms. Usually there is a beautiful view from the room, sometimes of a little rock garden other times of natural beauty. A private bath is usually part of the room.

An overview is presented of the Nikko National Park, a region of outstanding natural beauty in Japan. Nikko is best visited in the early spring and fall when the weather is most suitable for tourists, although rain is a permanent threat. Local restaurants and hotels are reviewed.

An personal account is presented of a traditional pageant conducted twice each year in the Nikko National Park of Japan to commemorate the delivery of the ashes of the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu there in 1616. Ieyasu was declared a god and a shrine was built there in his honour.
