George Wilhelm Steller

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the life and work of George Wilhelm Steller, the first naturalist to visit Alaska, are presented. Reference is made to the vivid accounts of his trip with Captain-Commander Vitus Bering and his role in saving the lives of over half the crew who were suffering from scurvy.

The story of Captain William Ralph Abercrombie's attempt in 1898 to find an American route to the Alaskan goldfields avoiding the payment of Canadian taxes is presented. The Richardson Highway now follows this trail.
