The taxes and fees charged by car rental companies can add much to the cost of a car rental. An analysis of rates charged by companies located on the airport and off the airport shows that those located on the airport usually charge more. The fees charges also varied by location.

The prices for summer car rentals in Europe listed in a May 1998 publication differed greatly from the actual prices in many cases. The discrepancies are attributed to car-model differences and supply and demand, but the variance in the discrepancies cannot be easily explained.
