Article Abstract:
The Matthew Island, about 30 miles long and between 2 and 6 miles wide is described that lies in the central eastern Bering Sea, 200 miles west of mainland Alaska. The experiences of the biologists, Dan Ruthrauff and Mike Litzow are presented in the pristine beauty that abounds on the island, which is the state's most remote spot.

Ramona Barnes, the first woman speaker of the Alaska of Representatives was born in Pikeville and died on November 26 in Anchorage at the age of 65. She is a pro-development lawmaker who worked on legislation that involved everything from Alaska Railroad to the Department of Corrections.
