Article Abstract:

Alaska has more miles of coastline than the entire contiguous United States. The Fairweather Range and the St. Elias Mountains are among the world's highest coastal peaks with summits of 15,000 and 18,000 feet. Bears stalk out spruce, cedar and hemlock forests to dig for clams. Sea otters play in beds of kelp in the volcanic Aleutians. Seven million salmon are caught in two days.
