Many view the 20 gauge shotgun's lighter load as a disadvantage when participating in sporting clays, where the 12 gauge is the weapon of choice. However, experts state that the 20 gauge can be used for competition shooting. Techniques for obtaining optimum performance from a 20 gauge were presented.

Four techniques to enhance a shooter's accuracy during clay shooting competitions are presented. The techniques include the maintained lead swing sequence, the pull-ahead sequence, the swing-through sequence and the sustained lead sequence.

The development of competition sporting clay shotguns is presented. Initial sporting clay shotgun models are derived from trap and skeet shotguns that were trimmed of their fore-ends and gun stock.
