Woman's realm

Article Abstract:

A report by Kit Campbell Associates, commissioned by the Sports Council's Facilities Unit, on sports facilities for women, indicates that women need to feel comfortable, confident and able to make choices. It is not easy to help women with choices as they are restricted by domestic and financial issues. Women do not seem to have the same confidence as men when participating in sports activities. It is important for equipment to suit women's ability and for a pleasant atmosphere to be created. The sensitivity of women and the design of facilities need to be taken into consideration in relation to comfort.

Using consultants

Article Abstract:

Various factors must be born in mind when selecting a consultant to help develop a project in the leisure industry, such as what precisely the role of the consultant is meant to be, and whether the consultant can become a partner in the project, with communication and trust developing. Specialist directories can be used to find a consultant, and the skills and experience of the consultant are important. The work should also be planned with a realistic time scale, carried out in stages.

Swimming strategy

Article Abstract:

An update of the 'Provision for Swimming' report first published in 1978 has highlighted changes in the strategic development of swimming. Encouraging optimum use of pools has relaced the original emphasis on providing facilities. Future strategy is concerned with providing swimming lessons and training opportunities. Imaginative programmes will be necessary to attract new participants. Extra finance will be required for modernisation.
