Most people do not take enough exercise any more, according to secretary of state for health Virginia Bottomley. The government is responding by seeking ways of making exercise easier and more attractive and by ensuring that health information is available from a wide range of sources. She believes that having different bodies responsible for promoting health and fitness does not cause any problems, and she welcomes the many initiatives which are now being set up.

The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) and healthcare provider BUPA are to launch the BUPA Approved Health and Fitness Club Network on January 1 1995. BUPA's 3.5 million members are to be encouraged to use approved health clubs to take regular exercise. BUPA members will also receive one week trial period free at the club, followed by a 20% membership discount.
