Article Abstract:

The tourist industry does not do enough to analyse the benefits of training, according to speakers at the annual conference of the Association of Teachers and Trainers in Tourism. In most cases, teachers responsible for tourism courses have no experience in the industry, and this problem is made worse by senior managers failing to support staff development. It is important to provide varied training programmes, not simply those which direct the employee towards a formal qualification.

English Tourist Board

Article Abstract:

The UK Development of Tourism Act, 1969 established the English Tourist Board (ETB) to encourage domestic holidays and tourist facilities. It advises on all tourism-related matters. Regional tourist boards implement ETB national policy. Its 1991 five year strategy addresses environmental matters, transport and communication problems, employee skills and competition within Europe.

The future of tourism at local level

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the importance of the role played by local authorities in promoting tourism in their areas are discussed. Particular attention is given to the importance for local authorities to consider drafting tourism policies for the decade to 2010.
