Sterling works on behalf of Cyprus

Article Abstract:

The Cyprus tourist industry is enjoying a good year in 1998, due mainly to the strength of sterling. Arrivals in the first eight months of 1998 were 8-10% higher than in the whole of 1997. Analysts forecast that the the total number of UK visitors during 1998 will exceed 900,000, which will be about 20% higher than in 1997. This will be around 40% of all tourists in Cyprus, and around four times more than the number of visitors from Germany, which is the industry's second biggest market. Factors which will affect the 1999 market include currency movements and the Russian economic crisis.
