There was a considerable variation in the performance of tourist attractions in the UK in 1995, with country parks, for example, seeing visitor numbers rise 7%, while visits to museums, galleries and workplaces fell by 2%. Overall, visits to tourist attractions rose by 2% from 1994 to 392 million, with spending by visitors up 6% to at least 1,100 million pounds sterling. Many attractions benefited from improved marketing, while others were assisted by favourable weather.

Article Abstract:

A report from the English Tourism Council shows a 1% fall in visitor numbers to historic properties in 1998, although spending rose by 4%. Visitor numbers for the year amounted to 70 million and expenditure totalled 270 million pounds sterling. Estimates suggest that cathedrals and important churches attracted 19.3 million visits, private historic properties attracted 15.2 million visitors and local authority properties attracted 6 million visits.

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of tourists have visited historic attractions in England since 1994. Research shows that the sector received 71 million visitors in 1997, an increase of two percent on the previous season. Properties owned by property organization English Heritage were five percent more popular in 1997 than in 1996. Around 2,500,000 people visited Westminster Cathedral in 1997, according to tourist agency English Tourist Board.
