Article Abstract:

A Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group survey has revealed operational defficiencies in the maintenance of UK swimming pool water quality. Problems may arise from inadequate filtration, backwashing, dilution and disinfection. Few pools employ resident maintenance engineers and pool managers may lack technical expertise. Operator training is often inadequate.

Fern (UK) Ltd and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) have developed a spineboard for safe transport of swimmers with suspected spinal injury. The Aquaboard is the first spineboard to meet RLSS UK standards. It features padded back panel, colour-coded straps and neoprene head immobiliser. A certificated training programme accompanies the board.

Safer swimming

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to safety strategies for pool operators are presented. Pool managers in the United Kingdom report few accidents but should also record near misses in order to develop efficient operational systems. A culture of safety via national protocols is encouraged by the Institute of Sports and Recreation Management.
