Profit from partnership

Article Abstract:

Coventry Racquet Centre, an independent leisure facility, has linked with training consultant Angelena Boden to set up a one-year pilot scheme for staff training, going against the general trend in the leisure industry to overlook staff training. The Centre looked at various training methods which were designed specifically for its work, and the scheme aimed to identify which staff would be suitable for becoming involved in training work. The scheme showed that more open communications were required, along with links with marketing, and has led to the formation of a detailed training plan.

National vocational qualifications (NVQs) offer standardised training opportunities in the leisure industry. NVQs emphasise in-post competency rather than theoretical knowledge. Four levels from basic to management are available. Participants are assessed against Sport and Recreation Lead Body standards of competence. Individual training plans are developed according to need. National standards are maintained through periodic external assessments.
