First Leisure is seeking to boost the profile of its Tamworth Snowdome as more operators and developers plan to establish a presence in the UK snow market. Gary Baker, the company's first Snowdome marketing manager, will promote Tamworth Snowdome, as well as raising awareness of the next two Snowdomes in Haydock, England, and Dartford, England. He will give particular attention to generating business throughout the year, overcoming the seasonal nature of snow sports. Marketing initiatives have included sending a video to 2,000 of the UK's largest companies and event management concerns.

The importance of marketing was raised at the first marketing leisure industry conference to be held in the UK in October 1998. The delegates were told organisations must focus attention on marketing because of the threat posed by the emergence of new technologies, such as the Internet, which provided online travel booking services. The conference was warned about the predicted economic downturn which would see more people spending time at home, rather than spending money on leisure activities.

Immediate impact websites are essential if a company wishes to get itself noticed, making it necessary to employ skilled website designers. The development of leisure club loyalty cards and industry partnering schemes is an effective method of marketing the competitive leisure industry.
