Malta is aggressively marketing itself as a holiday destination, emphasising its history of battles, sieges and unique architecture. New five-star hotels and the refurbishment of older ones are planned for the next few years. This strategy has been initiated by the National Tourism Organisation - Malta. Tourism in Malt has almost doubled in 10 years. Approximately 1.2 million people visited Malta in 1994 however visitor rates fell in 1995 and 1996 due to changes in the way in which tour operators receive subsidies for bookings.

Article Abstract:
Italy's regions receive state funding for tourism development and are free to decide how to invest in tourism, according to Stefano Landi, head of the country's tourism department. However, the department retains a significant institutional role, and is vital in ensuring a balance between the public and private tourism sectors. Landi does not wish to see a dramatic increase in the number of people visiting Italy, as he feels that it does not have much capacity for expansion.

Article Abstract:
The EC Directive on Package Travel will come into effect in Italy in Sep 1995. This will oblige travel organisers to provide financial protection against collapse to customers. Italian travel agents have expressed concern about the management of the trust fund to which they must contribute 0.5% of the cost of insurance policies on package holidays. Spain and Greece are now the only two European countries which have not ratified the directive.
