Article Abstract:
The European Institute of Tourism Management (EITM) has opened in France with an initial intake of 15 students for 16 months. The centre provides senior management training with emphasis on the international market. EITM has close ties with industry. Company directors sit on the board and influence curriculum. Students undertake six month placements with appropriate leisure companies. The Institute aims to attract highly motivated students with top management potential. Students' specialisms will develop through student/mentor relationships.

Companies from 30 countries will send teams to London to compete in the fifth World Corporate games between Sep 26, 1992 and Oct 4, 1992. Popular sporting events inclde badminton, squash and golf. The games encourage fitness rather than excellence and emphasise teamwork. The games are financed through competition fees and sponsorship. However, in 1992 the Foundation for Sport and the Arts provided 100,000 pounds sterling. London will benefit from associated tourist activity.

The British Tourist Authority maintains foreign language skills are essential for successful competition in the tourist market. Research has established a link between multi-lingual provision and increased foreign tourism. Companies should provide in-house language tuition and multi-lingual information services to raise the standard of tourist attractions. The BTA Winning Words awards have recognised Lancashire County Council and English Heritage for non-English services.
