UK students are not being taught to promote their skills and attributes effectively, according to a survey into the preparation for job hunting graduates receive from higher education institutions (HEIs). The survey was undertaken by organisations involved in the sport and leisure industry. The survey found 79% of students would like to remain in the industry after studing sport and recreation, with 55% actually being taken on. Sports and leisure organisations must work more closely with HEIs to promote their own interests as well as ensuring graduates are being taught the necessary skills needed.

Employers seek a number of qualities in graduates including motivation, reliability, confidence, ability to work in a team, organisational skills and dynamism. Universities are under pressure to produce employable individuals.
