Article Abstract:
The Oasis Project, a referral scheme between general practitioners (GPs) and Hailsham Leisure Lagoon, has benefited public health and the leisure facility. Mike Osborne, assistant leisure manager of Wealdon District Council, England initiated the scheme. GPs prescribe a course of exercise to clients who would not normally attend leisure centres. General health improvement has resulted in fewer GP appointments and medication. Osborne considers the scheme has generated leisure income while reducing National Health Service expenditure. The project's success has stimulated similar ventures by other health authorities.

New voice for leisure
Article Abstract:
Business in Sport and Leisure (BISL) was launched on Mar 4 1992 with 17 members to promote leisure industry interests by lobbying policy-making bodies. The 1992 agenda includes an appeal to the government to encourage local authority development of leisure by allowing more than 50% of capital from land sales to be spent on facilities. It is also lobbying for the extension of 100% capital allowances to the building of inner city sports facilities. It's future goal is to achieve cabinet status for the minister of sport.

Article Abstract:
Michael Dower, Director General of the Countryside Commission, is committed to extending the recreational use of the countryside and improving public access to it. Grants worth 13 million pounds sterling have encouraged land use change and the reopening of all public rights of way by 2000 is a priority. The national parks policy is being reassessed and may be extended. The Commission will cooperate with other rural agencies to develop the countryside sensitively with local communities' needs in mind.
